What is the difference between E-learning platform and LMS?

The emergence of the internet has brought a new wave of educational technology tools, from online e-learning platforms to learning management systems (LMSs). Both are widely used in educational institutions worldwide, but they have important differences that can make a big difference in the quality of instruction.

1. Cost

The cost of online e-learning platforms and LMSs can vary significantly, depending on the features offered and the organisation's size. In general, e-learning platforms are more affordable than LMSs. While some e-learning platforms are free, many offers paid plans that can provide more features and customisation options. On the other hand, LMSs are much more expensive, and organisations may need additional hardware or software to use the system.

2. Content Delivery

How content is delivered can be the biggest difference between an e-learning platform and an LMS. E-learning platforms allow users to create and upload content, such as video lectures and quizzes. This allows for more flexibility and customisation for the users and the ability to update content as needed easily. On the other hand, LMSs are designed to be more structured and rigid. They typically require content to be uploaded in a specific format and require users to adhere to a specific structure, such as a syllabus, as opposed to being able to customise the content as they see fit.

3. User Experience

The user experience of an e-learning platform and LMS can vary greatly. E-learning platforms tend to be simpler and more user-friendly, as they are designed to be easy for those who need to be tech-savvy. On the other hand, LMSs can be more complex, with more features and tools that may require technical knowledge and experience. As such, LMSs may be better suited for larger organisations or those with more experienced users, while e-learning platforms may be more suitable for smaller organisations or those with less technical expertise.
